OVERCOMING CHALLENGES | TAKING OPPORTUNITIES

In explaining what I do I always have to start with context. What is the context? That makes such a difference to how to explain or understand anything.

In business understanding the context is crucial in developing a successful outcome. Knowing the context today AND the likely context of the future – as much as anyone can imagine it. Complex environments are dynamic; they are influenced by many variables – ‘forces’ that are fluid and constantly evolving. Taking strategic decisions in these dynamic environments is perhaps the toughest and most important task of any leader in any business.

Getting a decision right in business can result in enormous value creation – getting it wrong can equally destroy value – and even destroy the enterprise. That’s the incredible power of understanding context.

CHANGING THE WAY BUSINESS THINKS & WORKS

This idea intrigues me a lot. Imagine if we could alter the behaviours, the paradigms, the mindsets so that we could all create and consume more value and more quality for everyone on the planet. Imagine if there was less waste and inequity.

The world has changed. It is full of challenge and opportunity. It’s a more socially aware and connected world. To take advantage of the new world the business has to adapt. And as the business changes, everything encompassed by the business has to change too.

LET’S AVOID SOLVING THE WRONG PROBLEMS REALLY WELL

Traditional ‘process/method’ driven approaches of advisory and consulting practices evolved when the world was a very different place.

When I was a client I was offended by the cynicism of it. They may have worked at a time when the business could afford to follow fixed business models built around standard functional disciplines. That is not the world we inhabit today.
